The Knoxville Police Department maintains social order and peace, as well as provides law enforcement services. It offers services for the protection of residents lives and their property, as well as deterrence, detection and investigation of criminal activities. The police department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). Located in Knoxville, Tenn., the Knoxville Police Department maintains a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations. It also operates a citizens police academy that provides training programs related to laws, firearms instruction, defensive tactics and first aid. The Knoxville Police Department supports the Explorer program, which is a worksite-based program for youths between the ages of 14 and 20.
