Incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness, The American Legion is one of the country s largest veterans service organization. It is involved in mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in the communities. The organization has 55 departments, one operating in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, France, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Philippines. Some of the divisions of The American Legion are Americanism, American Legion Children & Youth Commission, Child Welfare Foundation and the National Emblem Sales Division, to name a few.
