The Yankton Police Department works to safeguard lives and property, maintain law and order, and preserve peace through the enforcement of local, state and federal laws. It supports the Crime Stoppers program and operates administration, communication and support units. The department s K-9 division undertakes narcotics detection, apprehension and tracking of animals, building searches and evidence recovery. The Yankton Police department also handles drug arrests, and vehicle and currency seizures. Its animal control unit relocates stray animals to shelter. It hosts the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, which helps children avoid involvement with drugs, gangs and violence.
