- Chiropractic AdjustmentsBack Pain, Neck Pain Chiropractic’s famous first adjustment is recognized each year commemorating September 18th, 1895 as Chiropractic Founder’s Day. On this day, 118 years ago, Dr. Daniel David Palmer administered the first specific chiropractic adjustment on his patient, Harvey Lillard...
- SubluxationJean came to see me in 1997. She had residual neck pain from a car accident 10 years earlier. Her right-sided neck pain radiated into the right shoulder blade area and into her right arm, and over time into her lower back. Her neck was also stiff, with a reduced range of motion, and she noticed her posture was slumping over and getting worse. After her accident 10 years ago, she received 6 months of treatment, which relieved her pain by 90%, but the pain never fully went away, and over the years her pain slowly worsened. She was never told why she still hurt, but medically was given drugs to mask her pain. She suffered for 10 years before seeing my cable TV show “Health Source,” and decided to make an appointment. When I took x-rays, I identified a 119% loss of her neck curve (reversed). She also had a moderate amount of disc degeneration and thinning at one level. In one week of chiropractic treatment, she had significant pain relief (including her arm pain), and after 3 weeks her pain was almost gone, with occasional flare-ups. I gave Jean the option to stop care at that time, but she decided on a “fix” or “corrective” care program, to address the structural spinal problems and subluxations, the disc degeneration and wear, and the long-standing soft tissues residuals from the accident 10 years ago. I treated Jean 3-4 times a week for 3 months, and took new x-rays, which showed a 20% curve improvement. Over time her treatments were reduced, and to this day, Jean comes in once a month for wellness and maintenance care. Her neck, back, and arm feel great, her posture has improved, and she is back to working out on a regular basis. She enjoys pain-free vacations now, and is thrilled she gave chiropractic care another try.

- Chiropractic Injury Treatment
- AcupunctureDisc problems (injury plus slow and steady degeneration) usually develop slowly over time and often with little or no pain; therefore the person is not aware of the problems until later stages. This is why it can be so dangerous to evaluate your health by pain, or lack of it. X-ray and MRI tests may or may not find any abnormalities, but more likely than not the pain is still coming from irritated discs and joints. Obviously when you are told “your x-rays and MRI are normal,” they are confused about where the pain is coming from. Most disc irritation cases, even herniated discs and advanced arthritis, may be helped with chiropractic care, appropriate exercises, ergonomic changes and posture improvements. Many of you with back and leg pain may also find relief with physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, yoga, and other regular exercise programs. If chiropractic does not achieve the results you are looking for, I recommend trying all of these conservative options before doing other invasive procedures. Keep in mind that not all chiropractors use the same methods and techniques, so if you did not gain relief from one chiropractor, it does not necessarily mean that chiropractic treatment will not help. Often a different chiropractor who uses different adjustments and methods may help you get well again. This is similar to other providers; medical doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and personal trainers all differ with their methods of treatment and philosophies. Remember, emergency situations require emergency intervention, so check with your doctor if you are not sure about the severity of your problem. Some symptoms that may require emergency intervention include sudden onset of incontinence, sudden onset of other bowel or bladder symptoms, and severe leg pain with progressive leg weakness on one or both sides.
- Disc Herniation TreatmentMaybe. I work on patients every day that have disc herniations in their neck and back. Often conservative care works, and sometimes not. Chiropractors are trained to identify cases that need medical intervention, and I will refer you to a medical professional if I feel you will not benefit from my treatment. In rare cases, injections and surgery are necessary, but chiropractic care can resume later to improve your neck and spine to try to prevent the pain and disability from returning. Some patients benefit from medical and chiropractic care at the same time.
