General Info

They have the most extensive collection of family and local histories, as well as an on-site genealogist. For inquiries regarding official court documents and records, including land and title documentation, please call Lincoln County Registry of Deeds at 207-882-7341 or the Registry of Probate at 207-882-7392. All official documents were transferred to Lincoln County Courthouse when the Court moved from Pownalborough to Wiscasset in 1794. The Lincoln County Historical Association ( LCHA ) was founded in 1954 by noted local artist Mildred Burrage to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Lincoln County, which once extended from Cumberland County in the south all the way to the Canadian border. Key to our mission are the preservation and restoration of the Pownalborough Courthouse, built in 1761, and the 1811 Old Jail and Lincoln County Museum in Wiscasset. Today, both properties are preserved and managed by LCHA as museums, open to the public during the summer months or by appointment. LCHA has a membership that includes local residents, summer residents and people from across the U.S. with an interest in the history of Lincoln County. In addition to our historic properties, LCHA owns and manages a collection featuring textiles, tools ( including an ice industry exhibit ), photographs, maps, home craft items such as baskets, housewares, documents and other ephemera from Lincoln County over the years. LCHA sponsors an annual winter lecture series for the community, an annual Antiques Show, and many other community events and activities. Our office is open from May through September. During that time, we can also be reached at ( 207 ) 882-6817. Email LCHA@wiscasset.net or call 207-882-6817 for more information. Membership in LCHA provides a host of benefits including receiving our quarterly newsletter, Lincoln County Chronicle, free tours, advance notification of all LCHA activities and invitations to special Members Only events.
