A current Chairman of the Massachusetts Aeronautics' Commission, Saltmarsh has also served as an Executive Committee Member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and as an MBTA Advisory Board Member for 30 years. A past Town Meeting Member and Selectman for the town of Winchester, Saltmarsh's record of public service leadership dates back to 1957. The Massachusetts Municipal Association in 1982 named Saltmarsh Legislator of the Year. Saltmarsh also received a Presidential Citation from The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, ( AOPA ), in March of 2000 for his leadership in developing aviation and the airport system in Massachusetts during his tenure as Chairman of the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission. The Winchester Chamber of Commerce awarded him Man of the Year in 1981. He received the Outstanding Service Award in 1986 from the Central Middlesex Association for Retarded Citizens and won the 1988 Outstanding Contribution award by the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce.
