Western Fuels Association Inc. is a nonprofit national fuel supply cooperative. It supplies coal and transportation services to consumer-owned electric utilities. The firm serves customers throughout the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and the southwestern United States. It caters to a wide variety of public power entities, including rural electric generation/transmission cooperatives and municipal utilities. The company provides expertise in coal mining, administration, procurement and transportation management. It manages a fleet of over 1,600 railcars. Through affiliated companies, Western Fuels Association Inc. operates the Dry Fork Mine near Wyoming and the New Horizon Mine in southwestern Colorado. Some of the firm s members include the Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Kansas City Board of Public Utilities and Sunflower Electric Power Corporation.
