- RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY: Two types of restorations are available, tooth colored fillings (either composite or glass ionomer) and inlays. Composite (white) fillings are the most commonly used filling material in modern dentistry. They are natural in appearance and less of the tooth is removed during preparation than with the traditional amalgam filling. Composite fillings have light reflecting particles to allow color matching to your natural tooth. The tooth is prepared by removing all the decay and then treated with a special solution to make the surface slightly rough to ensure a strong bond between the composite material and the tooth enamel. Inlays are the other alternative to the conventional filling. These restorations are ideally suited for replacing old amalgam restorations. An inlay is a much more conservative solution and only minimal tooth structure needs to be disturbed. Decay is removed and cleaned from the tooth and a highly accurate impression is made of the prepared surface. This impression is used to create a model of the tooth that is then sent to our laboratory to create a porcelain (tooth colored) restoration which is then cemented into the prepared surface of the tooth. Precious metals such as gold may also be used. Gold is a stronger more durable metal and can resist the forces from chewing and biting better. It is usually only used in back teeth that aren't so visible. Dr. Kaufman does not use materials containing mercury. IMPLANT DENTISTRY: The ideal solution for the replacement of missing teeth is dental implants. Developed from medical grade titanium, an implant resembles a screw and replicates a natural root as it integrates with your jawbone to become a solid foundation for a crown, bridge or when a number of implants are placed, an entire upper or lower arch denture. Implants are identical to natural teeth in appearance and function and can even last for life.
