- ArthritisDry eyes can occur naturally as a result of aging or hormonal changes, typically in women especially after menopause. In fact, women over the age of 50 have a 50% greater risk of dry eye disease than men do of the same age. However, dry eye disease can occur at any age in both women and men. Dry eye disease can result from taking certain medications that reduce tear production such as antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants. Environmental factors can cause drying out of the eyes in dry, dusty, smoky, and windy climates. Home air conditioners and heating systems and excessive time spent on computers or tablets can also cause dry eyes and exacerbate symptoms due to lack of blinking. Dry eye can also be associated with certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, diabetes and thyroid problems.
- CryotherapyMost retinal tear can be treated by sealing the retinal tear to the back of the eye. This can be done by laser or cryotherapy

- GlaucomaGlaucoma is a vision threatening eye disease causing damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the part of the eye that carries visual signals from the retina to the brain. The brain then interprets these signals into images that you see. In the healthy eye, a clear fluid called aqueous humor circulates inside the front portion of your eye. To maintain a constant healthy eye pressure, your eye continually produces a small amount of aqueous humor while an equal amount of this fluid flows out of your eye. If you have glaucoma, the aqueous humor does not flow out of the eye properly. Fluid pressure in the eye builds up and over time, causes damage to the optic nerve.
- OphthalmologyOculoplastics is a specialized area of ophthalmology that deals with the medical and surgical treatment of the eyelids, the lacrimal system (tear drainage), and the orbital cavity which surrounds the eyeball.
- Macular DegenerationAge related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 50. ARMD is a disease of the macula, which is the central part of the retina. The macula is responsible for focusing your central vision controlling our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces, and see objects in fine detail. For example, imagine you are looking at a clock with hands. With ARMD you might see the clock numbers but not the hands. Many people do not realize they have macular degeneration until their vision is very blurry. This is why it is important to have regular visits to an ophthalmologist.
- Laser Eye SurgerySouthwestern Pennsylvania Eye Surgery Center is a state-of-the-art, Medicare and nationally accredited* ambulatory surgery center. The surgery center opened for business in 1988 and is staffed by a highly skilled team of anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, registered nurses and ancillary staff.
- CataractsA variety of ocular surgeries are performed at the center including cataract, retina, cornea, and oculoplastics, as well as other laser procedures. The center performs over 3,000 procedures annually.
- Cataract SurgeryA cataract is an opacity (cloudiness) which occurs in the lens of the eye. The lens is a natural tissue within the eye that is responsible for focusing light onto the retina. Normally we are born with crystal clear lenses. Over time, the lens turns yellow due to the natural aging process. As the cloudiness progresses, the vision becomes more and more impaired, eventually resulting in the need for cataract surgery. Other causes of cataract include; metabolic changes such as diabetes, injury, various forms of radiation, toxic chemicals and certain drugs. If we live long enough, we will all eventually develop cataracts. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in adults age 60 and older.
- Eye ExamARMD usually starts as a slowly progressive disease without pain, so it will often go undetected in patients early in the disease. That is why it is important to have regular eye exams by your ophthalmologist especially if you have risk factors for the disease. During your eye exam, your doctor will perform a dilated eye exam. He or she will put dilating drops in your eyes to open the pupil. This will allow him or her to look inside your eye at your macula in great detail with a special lens.

- Diabetic RetinopathyPeople with diabetes can develop a disease called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes. High blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes causes retinal blood vessels to break down, leak, or become blocked over time. This damage impairs vision causing significant vision loss if not treated. In some people with diabetic retinopathy, serious damage to the eye can occur when abnormal blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina.
