The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a public agency that saves lives, prevents injuries, and reduces traffic-related health care and other economic costs. It develops, promotes and implements educational, engineering and enforcement programs to end preventable tragedies and reduce safety-related economic costs associated with vehicle use and highway travel. The agency operates a vehicle safety hotline that helps in the reporting of suspected safety defects in vehicles, vehicle equipment and child safety seats. Additionally, it provides a fatality analysis reporting system that assists the traffic community in identifying traffic safety problems and evaluating the motor vehicle safety standards and highway safety initiatives. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a part of the Department of Transportation and is located in Washington, D.C.
