The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, established in 1953, is a nonprofit professional medical association dedicated to treating and improving the quality of life for children, adolescents and families affected by mental, behavioral or developmental disorders. The academy is a membership-based organization, composed of more than 7,400 child and adolescent psychiatrists and other interested physicians. Its members actively research, evaluate, diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders. The organization collaborates with other medical associations through a seat in the American Medical Association House of Delegates and liaisons to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Family Physicans. It also offers fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. The academy has headquarters in Washington, D.C.
