- Emergency CareDiphenhydramine is available in liquid form without a prescription, to use for hives and for itching with certain rashes. It can be given every 6 to 8 hours as needed. If your child is experiencing difficulty breathing, wheezing, tongue swelling, lip tingling, vomiting, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction, you can give them Benadryl, but you must go to the emergency department immediately. Do not administer diphenhydramine to an infant less than 1 year old without speaking to your doctor first.

- ImmunizationsThe American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend annual influenza ("flu") immunization for all children, both healthy and those with high-risk conditions (asthma, diabetes, etc.) ages 6 months through 18 years. Children often have the highest attack rates of influenza in a community during seasonal influenza epidemics and play a major role in transmitting influenza virus to household and other close contacts and can experience severe or fatal complications from influenza infection. The vaccine prevents or decreases the disease in those who receive it. Piedmont Pediatrics encourages all children ages 6 months through 18 years to receive the flu vaccine as we anticipate a very active flu season. We also offer the flu vaccine to our parents on a self-pay basis.
