- Warts
- ArthritisAn inflammatory disease that is genetically linked and leads to well-defined pink, scaly plaques on the body, with a predilection for the elbows, knees, and scalp. Often times the nails are affected and some suffer with psoriatic arthritis. Many topical and light-therapy treatments are available, and newer, so-called “biologic” agents that are usually injected into the skin are making this difficult-to-treat disease much easier to handle.
- Family PracticeDr. Finkelstein is a volunteer faculty member and resident instructor for the Tatem-Brown Family Practice Residency Program in Voorhees, NJ and the Department of Dermatology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
- BotoxBotox and Dysport, along with other FDA-approved muscle relaxants reduce wrinkles in certain areas of the face. The procedure is very safe and effective, with minimal to no pain and no downtime associated with these injections. These medicines tend to last ‘up to 4 months or slightly longer.
- Skin Cancer
- DermatologyUsually two types used in dermatology practice, the SHAVE BIOPSY and the PUNCH BIOPSY. Both involve local anesthetic (can sting a bit) injected by a small needle. The small tissue sample is removed without pain, and the area is covered with petroleum jelly, a bandage, and allowed to heal. The punch biopsy involves sutures, while the shave biopsy does not. The tissue sample is sent to a pathologist, a physician who examines tissues under the microscope to determine or confirm the dermatologist’s clinical judgment. Scarring is minimal.
- Acne Treatment
- EczemaThe majority of cases occur in infants or children, but sometimes this difficult and itchy disease can persist into adulthood. Tends to occur in those with allergies or asthma and is genetically linked. Intense itching that leads to heavy scratching is the hallmark of this disease, which can be very difficult for parents of those young infants to handle. Many topical treatments are available, along with the measures we use to treat dry skin. For older children and adults who suffer from this, there are oral medicines and light-treatments that provide benefit.
- FungusInflammation caused by fungus in the top layer of skin that can lead to specific changes in hair, nails, and/or a rash in the skin. Oftentimes this is transmitted from person to person, or from animals or plants to people. Treatment is either topical or with oral medication.
- LesionsGenetics (skin type and family history) and history of sun exposure and “early burns” give one a tendency for more concerning skin lesions like Actinic Keratoses, Basal Cell Carcinomas, Squamous Cell Carcinomas, and Melanomas.
