Hearing loss is often referred to as a "hidden disability". It is not obvious or apparent to those who are trying to communicate with you. You can be labeled or misinterpreted as snobbish, rude, inattentive, confused, senile or odd. Last on the list, if ever, is the possibility that you may be hearing-impaired. This happens because hearing loss is not a visual disability. Never the less it is a debilitating condition that can effect relationships, social involvement, emotional stability and communicative areas. It is a problem that is estimated to affect over 30 million people. Unfortunately many do not receive the assistance that's available in today's "high tech" world. There are two types of common hearing loss: conductive and sensorineural. A sensorineural loss is the result of damage to the nerve fibers in the inner ear. It is commonly caused by the natural aging process, but can also be caused by noise exposure, strong medications, diabetes, stroke, and other circulatory diseases. Hearing aids are the best solution to a sensorineural hearing loss.
