- Dental CareAs an AAHA-accredited veterinary facility, we follow the AAHA® Dental Care Guidelines. These guidelines recommend regular oral examinations and dental cleanings, under general anesthesia, for all adult dogs and cats. AAHA recommends these procedures at least annually starting at one year of age for cats and small-breed dogs, and at two years of age for large-breed dogs.
- VaccinationAll warm-blooded animals (dogs, cats, livestock, and wildlife) can become infected with rabies virus. Because rabies is also a threat to humans, many states, including New York, require vaccination of all dogs and cats. Even indoor cats can be exposed to rabies, often by wildlife (especially bats) entering the house.
- Behavioral Counseling
- Nutritional CounselingLyme disease is a tick-borne bacterial disease caused by the organism Borrelia burgdorferi. A recent study demonstrated its presence in nearly 50% of ticks examined in New York State. Clinical signs include pain and lameness, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and depression.
- Comprehensive ExaminationLike a credit card, but better. CareCredit works just like a regular credit card, but without high interest rates, annual fees or pre-payment penalties. CareCredit offers flexible and convenient financing options with zero hidden fees and low monthly payments. You can use your CareCredit card over and over for all your pet's follow-up care as well as annual exams and vaccines. So you can focus on what really matters, like playing fetch and learning new tricks.
- Parasites Treatment and ControlParasite control is an area of considerable importance to pet owners due to the potential threat that animal parasites pose to humans. Called zoonotic diseases because they can be passed from animals to people, the common intestinal worms of both dogs and cats are not to be taken lightly. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta is encouraging veterinarians to be far more proactive in the management of these diseases.
- Behavioral Disorder TreatmentCanine Distemper Virus causes diarrhea, fever, respiratory disease, seizures, muscular twitches, and a discharge from the eyes and nose. While it is no longer a common disease, it is still seen in unvaccinated animals, particularly from shelters, and in puppies.
- Pain ManagementAmong our surgical services, we offer routine care such as spaying and neutering as well as a range of surgical procedures to relieve serious complications. These may include surgeries such as stomach and intestinal, bladder, eye, orthopedic, wound repairs, and mass removals. Using general anesthesia and advanced pain management techniques, our veterinary surgeons will make sure your pet is comfortable and safe during any procedure. For procedures that demand specialist and extremely sensitive procedures, we have developed strong relationships with nearby experts for referrals.
- Vomiting Treatment
- Diarrhea TreatmentParvo Virus causes severe intestinal problems in dogs. Infected individuals have bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and become quite depressed and dehydrated quickly.
- Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
- Upper Respiratory Illness TreatmentRespiratory disease is easily passed from one cat to another by droplets in the air from coughing or sneezing. Kittens can die from the disease, especially if they get pneumonia.
- Injury Treatment
- Leptospirosis TreatmentLeptospirosis is a bacterium most commonly affecting the kidneys, although it can affect many of the major organs. It is introduced to the environment in the urine of livestock and wildlife, especially raccoons (who will urinate on your lawn, and then your dog will eat the grass).
- Feline Retro Virus TreatmentFeline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus are two common viruses in cats. Infection can be from mother to kitten (usually just with FeLV) or from exposure to another infected cat (both FeLV and FIV). All new additions to a household should be tested for these two important diseases. Both viruses affect cats by interfering with the immune system, leaving it unable to fight off other infections. While some cats can successfully fight off an infection with one of these viruses, most cats that become infected will eventually die from a virus-related disease.
- Obesity TreatmentHigh-quality puppy or kitten food is necessary for the healthy growth and development of your new pet. Always offer fresh water and never give your young pet table food. Baby animals have sensitive digestive systems and we need to protect them from illness and long-term damage. Avoiding table food from the start helps prevent pet obesity, finicky eaters, or animals with poor diets. Many human treats may be toxic to pets, so give treats formulated just for pets. They are delicious too! Feel free to consult the doctor regarding high-quality pet foods and treats and an appropriate diet plan for your new pet.
- Diabetes Treatment
- Kidney Disease TreatmentGood dental health means better overall health for your pet. Research shows that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three. Further, dental disease doesn’t affect just the mouth, but can lead to serious health problems including heart, lung, and kidney disease. This makes it very important to provide your pets with proper dental care from the start.
- Wound and Fracture CareVeterinary radiology, or x-ray, is used to diagnose a potential disease or injury in your pet. Contemporary x-rays expose your animal to small, harmless amounts of radiation for speedy, accurate, and low-cost results. With digital radiology, the x-ray imaging is immediately digitized for display on a computer. This allows for an even clearer and more detailed image. With this kind of state-of-the-art technology, our experts can easily pinpoint tumors or identify bone fractures and work to begin the healing process right away.

- Spaying and NeuteringWhat used to be a simple, straight-forward recommendation is now a bit more complicated. In the last 5-10 years there has been a lot of research done to find if there were any adverse effects in spaying and neutering at very young ages, and even some studies to find if waiting longer than the traditional 6 months of age might be a healthier alternative. The results? Stay tuned! So far it doesn’t look like there are any significant adverse effects of early spaying and neutering in MOST breeds and mixed breeds. But there is some early, troubling data showing a potential link between spaying and neutering before 2 years of age and the development of several different diseases in at least a couple breeds. This data was on a very small sample size and much more work needs to be done. At this time we are still recommending spaying and neutering around 6 months of age for MOST of our patients, but as you can imagine, we now have much longer conversations about it than we ever did before.
- Laboratory ServicesDogs: We recommend an annual blood test to check for the presence of heartworms. Additionally, we recommend a year-round, once-a-month medication available to prevent heartworms and intestinal worms for all dogs.

- Senior Pet CareEarly screening of your senior pet is the first defense against age-related diseases and deterioration. This screening can detect such problems as diabetes, hormonal diseases, changes in liver and kidney function, and low-grade infections. Declining kidney function is the most common reason for illness and debilitation in older pets and early intervention may be as easy as a diet change.
