General Info
Farmers Bank embodies a long work history in Greene County. The first banking house and real estate were constructed at a cost of $1, 211.57 in 1911. On September 14, 1911 the institution was chartered and capitalized with $25, 000.00. The Bank flourished for the next two decades until March 14, 1935. President Franklin Roosevelt declared a bank holiday and the following day the directors voted to reopen for business. On October 24, 1933, Farmers Bank made an application to become a Charter Member Bank in the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. At this time, deposit accounts were insured for $2, 500.00. L. C. Stewart was employed by the Bank on November 28, 1939 with an annual salary of $150.00. During this time, L. O. Benton, Sr. joined the Bank as a director. The Stewart and Benton families struck a strong business relationship that would manage and direct Farmers Bank for the next fifty years. John B. Stewart, L. C. Stewart, A.J. Stewart, A.W. Fitzpatrick, L.O. Benton, Jr. and L. O. Benton, Sr. all worked on the Board of Directors. Farmers Bank has always been a very progressive bank in serving Greene and surrounding counties. In the 60's the Bank was one of the first banks in the nation to offer its customers "Drive In" banking services. In the 70's the Bank was one of the first banks in the nation to offer ATM services. In 1986, Putnam-Greene Financial Corporation purchased Farmers Bank. This enabled Farmers Bank to keep its local control but increase its size of loans due to a higher capital base. The Bank continues to maintain its State Charter and local Board of Directors. Today, Farmers Bank prides itself on customer service with a personal hometown touch. Although times have changed, we still realize that commitment to the well being of our community is our first priority.
