- Pediatric CareDr. Tara O’Brien graduated from Bastyr University in 2020 and went on to complete residency programs in Washington state focused on family and pediatric care. She is excited to have moved back to Maine to be closer to family and put down roots with her patients. Dr. O’Brien practices from a trauma informed and weight inclusive paradigm, she believes that the clinical experience itself can be medicine. Establishing your personally held definition of health and unpacking where this definition came from to move toward an understanding of your own bodily autonomy is her highest goal for you as her patient. She loves working with the entire family, infants to grandparents and is excited to bring Naturopathic care to your loved ones. She is currently seeing patients for yearly wellness visits, acute visits, and problem focused exams. Dr. O’Brien uses physical medicine, counseling, and botanical medicine as her primary modalities, but is well versed in and leans on many more in the clinical encounter.

- GynecologyA VBAC or vaginal birth after cesarean has become a bit controversial in the childbirth community. Any previous trauma to the uterus, including the incision made to birth a baby during a cesarean section slightly increases the chances that the uterus may rupture during a subsequent labor. At this time we do not accept VBAC clients however have offered many women co-care with an OB-GYN. If you are planning a VBAC, please contact us to discuss how we can offer supportive co-care during your prenatal period, labor and birth.

- Labor and DeliveryBirth in a birth center has been shown to be as safe as birth in a hospital for women who are low-risk. The difference is in the higher rates of intervention in a hospital such as induction, vacuum extraction, episiotomies and cesarean sections. The National Birth Center Study II published in 2013, showed that more than 9 out of 10 women (94%) who entered labor planning a birth center birth achieved a vaginal birth. The C-section rate for low-risk women who chose to give birth at a birth center was only 6%—compared to the U.S. C-section rate of 27% for low-risk women. This means that the C-section rate for women in birth centers is more than 4 times lower than what is seen among low-risk women in the U.S. This has both short and long-term implications for a woman’s recovery and options for care in the future.

- UltrasoundLaboratory testing is an essential tool that allows the practitioner to evaluate a patient’s state of health. These diagnostic approaches allow us to look deeply into how the body manifests illness. We use local laboratory services as well as specialty laboratories around the country that may focus on more unique conditions such as food allergies, and evaluation of hormonal or neurotransmitter production during pregnancy and postpartum. We use local hospitals and ultrasound facilities to perform ultrasounds when appropriate.
- Sports MedicineWe specialize in both naturopathic medicine and midwifery. We combine naturopathic therapies and nutrition with a traditional check up, much like old-time family practice doctors. Our naturopathic doctors enjoy getting to know people and being a part of a families’ healthcare. They also provide annual exams, well baby/child visits, sports physicals and integrate diagnostic lab work as needed.
