The Independent Collegian has a rich tradition of covering the news that is relevant to the students, faculty and staff of the University of Toledo. For the last three years, The Independent Collegian has earned top honors from the Society of Professional Journalists as the best non-daily student newspaper in the multi-state region. The student newspaper of The University of Toledo traces its roots to 1919, when it was founded as The Universi-Teaser. In 1922, the name of the newspaper was changed to The Campus Collegian and was shortened to The Collegian in 1962. In 2000, the newspaper severed legal and financial ties to the university, and today it is published by the Collegian Media Foundation, a 501 ( c ) non-profit organization.
