Shannon Price, M.D. with Affinity Physicians for Women is now using 4D ultrasound technology to give expecting parents more detailed images of their unborn baby. “The 4D ultrasound allows parents to take a sneak peek of their baby's first movements inside the womb,” said Dr. Price, a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist. “You can actually see what the baby is going to look like before he or she is even born. You can also view the heart beating and perhaps catch the baby yawning or stretching.” An ultrasound is the machine that allows expecting parents to see their baby during the mother’s pregnancy. A sonogram is a still picture taken of the baby during the ultrasound. The 4D ultrasound takes 3D ultrasound images, or 3D sonograms, and adds the element of time to the process. This results in live action images of the baby, similar to a video. “This cutting-edge fetal imaging helps to increase depth perception and provide exceptional anatomical realism,” said Dr. Price. “Patients can watch their baby during a relaxed, personalized and unique imaging session, creating a magical moment which can be preserved for a lifetime,” she said. “Gender can be determined during the 4D session if requested. We’ll also provide the still shots and moving images of the baby on a CD. It makes for a great keepsake.” Dr. Price said 4D ultrasound is considered an elective imaging procedure, serving as a compliment to traditional ultrasound. Not all insurance carriers cover the service. “We have an affordable package for those who have to pay out-of-pocket,” said Dr. Price. She recommends that parents schedule their 4D experience between 28 and 30 weeks to obtain the best images. Dr. Price earned her medical degree from Florida State University and completed residency training in OB/GYN at Greenville Health System in Greenville, SC. Before joining Affinity Physicians for Women in 2015, she practiced with North Florida Women’s Care in Tallahassee and Southwest Georgia Obstetrics and Gynecology in Albany. Dr. Price’s services include pregnancy care plans and deliveries for expectant mothers; gynecologic surgery; wellness checks; infertility evaluation; treatment for menstrual disorders; menopausal management; and, health and wellness education.
