- Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Terre Haute. A congregation of 100 members and friends, we have been a congregation for 50 years. But Unitarian and Universalisttype thinkers existed in the world long before, undoubtedly when the first person proposed another answer about meaning and purpose rather than accepted someone elses opinion categorically. Indeed, essential to our philosophy is the desire to individually and collectively search for various paths of beliefs in an attempt to create our personal theology and/or philosophy. We invite you to be part of that Unitarian Universalist process. Most UUs in fact, about 90% of usonce belonged to another religious movement, or to no such movement. Each of us come-outersthrough the use of reason, study and personal reflectioncame to the conclusion that we desired a religion which allowed us to be in search of a system of belief and action we could call our own, and to be in concert with others who were doing the same thing. The words applied to some organized religions: dogma, doctrine and creed go against the grain of our philosophy. The words freedom, equality and tolerance are words we embrace. A Unitarian Universalist can question any traditional theological concept or word. There is no one way to be a UU. We sit side by side: theists, atheists, agnostics, mystics, existentialists, Christian UUs, Buddhist UUs, Jewish UUs the list is infinite! And sometimes we combine these various beliefs. In common is our attempt to practice the various principles of our movement, including the one that honors the inherent worth and dignity of every human being. This extends to respecting our differences of belief and lifestyle. It means that ours is a practical religion, one which does good deeds in the world and is concerned with the here and now. Truly, our religion honors the human condition and its spirit as we travel the path toward understanding and appreciation for the mysterious process which created us in the first place. Our regular Sunday services include hymns, readings, meditations, musical selections and a sermon. We also share our joys and concerns at which time each person is invited to express what is heartfelt. Our service begins at 10:30 a.m. at which time we also have religious education classes for our youth and childcare. In addition to Sunday Services, we have monthly pot-luck suppers, periodic concerts and special events, and meetings of special interest groups like the Rationalist Free Thinkers (9:15 a.m. most Sundays). We invite you to visit us again, to explore our church and share your hopes, thoughts and ideas. Upon your next visit with us we will have a name tag for you beside the Guest Book you signed if you would like to use to help us all greet you. Again, dear friend, welcome!
