The Hillsborough Department of Health and Social Services mission is to assure within available resources the provision of quality health care to the county's eligible medically poor residents who lack other coverage by promoting access to health care providers within the county; giving special emphasis to prevention, early intervention and health education; promoting coordination among appropriate social service and health agencies; and by encouraging the efficient use of available resources. Hillsborough HealthCare Program is a managed health care program funded by a special sales tax and administered by the department. It has four networks providing primary care at several clinics strategically located in the county. Hundreds of participating referral specialists are in the network, as well as an array of diagnostic and hospital services. Hillsborough HealthCare also covers prescriptions, vision, dental, home health and other medically necessary services.
