Not a bad place to leave your loved one. Price is better than most places. With our first tour everything looked so great and everyone was very nice. But once someone moves in they realize this is not exactly as it seems. This is supposed to be indpendent living but it is evident that close to half the residents don't belong here. Many of the residents have some form of dementia and some pretty severe yet they have no aides taking care of them so they walk around totally oblivious to what's going on. There are aides working there but not for Island shores. I feel like I'm in a nursing home on most days, especially when some residents are walking around with soiled clothes, stinking like urine or feces and many smell like they never get a shower. The food is a disappointment. I have never seen so many people throwing away their meal everyday. There is a limited choice of activities. If you don't play bingo, then tv is about it. The mattress they provide is the cheapest piece of garbage that leaves most of us with back pain. Housekeeping is decent, other staff members are very nice. The director is completely different towards the residents than how she was while trying to sell us. One of the biggest shocks to many is how fast they raise the rent. We just got our second raise in the 13 months that I've been there and another raise is forthcoming. They raise 5% every year. That alone will probably be the reason I have to leave as it's just getting too expensive for me living on a fixed income.

You could not ask for a better place. I thought my grandmother was going to give us a hard time about going to Island Shores but the staff and other residents made her feel at home as soon as she arrived. She can't stop talking about how much she loves it there. She has been on the AC trips and loves to go down for the computer, exercise and arts and crafts classes. She says that bingo is so much fun as is the entertainment they provide. I did look around at other facilities and none compared to Island Shores. They were either way to expensive or not such a nice place to be. There is no other place on staten island.

Island Shores is a fantastic place for seniors. My Dad was able to keep his independence but still have peace of mind that he is safe and being taken care of. I thought I was doing him a favor by keeping him at home with help but I wasnt. Now he is active and he has become his old self again. I have no doubt that this place will please your loved one. The price tag for Staten Island housing is reasonable too.
