Sara Kim, MD, serves as the interim director of breast surgery at Staten Island University Hospital. She oversees the treatment and care plans for patients with breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ-a noninvasive form of breast cancer-as well as women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer based on their family history, genetics and other environmental factors. Dr. Kim also manages benign breast disease such as fibroadenomas, cysts, calcifications and nipple discharge. Dr. Kim's surgical specialties include lumpectomy, mastectomy, skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy and lymph node dissection."I went into this field because I wanted to help women of all ages with different types of breast disease achieve a cure whenever possible," says Dr. Kim. "I enjoy the partnerships I develop with my patients. The better I get to know them, the better I'm able to meet their individual needs." Dr. Kim earned her medical degree from New York Medical College and then completed her general surgery residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Kim joined Northwell Health in 2017, after completing her breast surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute."My goal as a clinician is to deliver the best possible evidence-based treatment to each patient, using a multidisciplinary approach," says Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim collaborates with plastic surgeons to offer patients breast-conserving surgery and various other breast reconstruction options. She also works with a radiation oncologist to tailor post-operative radiation treatment, and with a medical oncologist to determine the appropriate timing for anti-cancer medications. Occupational therapists are another valuable part of the treatment team and deliver care to enhance shoulder mobility after surgery. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Kim is an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. She is also member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and a part of the Katz Institute for Women's Health. In 2021, she received the Northwell Health Physician Partners Patients' Choice Award for her consistent 5-star ratings from patients.Overall, Dr. Kim describes her approach to care as patient-focused. "I consider the patient as a whole and take their treatment preferences and lifestyle factors into consideration when I develop their care plans," she says.
