- Nutritional CounselingThere are few signs that owners can see that could indicate that your dog has Lyme Disease. Many of the symptoms are not shown until a few months after the transmission. The most common signs are lameness or arthritis accompanied by loss of appetite, depression and possible fever. Other symptoms include lymph node swelling and painful joints that can be warm to the touch; symptoms often have sudden onsets and can come and go.
- Comprehensive ExaminationToday's modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past. Here at State College Veterinary Hospital, we do a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics, to ensure that they are healthy enough to go under anesthesia. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet. The handout on anesthesia explains this in greater detail.
- Parasites Treatment and ControlState College Veterinary Hospital usually recommends checking a stool sample at least once a year for all pets. This is extremely important for pets that go outside and for households that have small children. When we check the fecal sample we are looking for common parasites like roundworm and hookworm, both of which can result in very serious health conditions. More than 1/3 of the nation's dogs are infected with intestinal parasites. And the Centers for Disease Control estimates between one and three million people are infected each year in the U.S.
- Pain ManagementAnything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don't whine or cry, but you can be sure they feel it. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.
- Vomiting Treatment
- Diarrhea TreatmentThe three year distemper has been challenged studied and proven to protect dogs for distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo Virus for three straight years. However the three year vaccine does not cover the other three viruses, so we recommend vaccinating against them based on each dog’s lifestyle. Parainfluenza is also in the Bordetella Vaccine (Kennel Cough) so your animal might already be getting this vaccination. Corona Virus is recommended if your animal is around a breeding program with puppies or if they break out with bloody diarrhea when stressed. Most of the time we will drop the Corona Virus if the dog is not at risk for it. We do however recommend the Leptospirosis vaccine every year because it can be contagious to humans causing kidney failure. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread by wildlife and domestic animals thru urine found in streams and ponds.
- Leptospirosis TreatmentWe switch most dogs over to a three year distemper at their two year birthday. Last year your puppy got a six way distemper that was only good for one year. That six way DHLPPC consisted of: D (Distemper) H (Hepatitis) L (leptospirosis) P (Parainfluenza) P (Parvo Virus) C (Corona Virus).
- Diabetes Treatment
- Heart Disease TreatmentWe provide ECG services through IDEXX, a nationally recognized team of cardiologists that read, interpret, and provide specialist consultation on your pet's ECG.
- Kidney Disease TreatmentThere are two Crocus plants: one that blooms in the spring and the other in the autumn (Colchicum autumnale). The spring plants are more common and are part of the Iridaceae family. These ingestions can cause general gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea. These should not be mistaken for Autumn Crocus, part of the Liliaceae family, which contain colchicine. The Autumn Crocus is highly toxic and can cause severe vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, and respiratory failure. If you’re not sure what plant it is, bring your pet to their veterinarian immediately for care. Signs may be seen immediately but can be delayed for days.
