- Medical Weight LossThe take home message is that if satiety can be induced by seeing 30 smartphone images of a particular craved food item, it is likely that an app can be developed as a weight management tool to show pictures of that craved item 30x when a person initially develops that craving. Stay tuned.

- Ear InfectionsDuring the pandemic, ear infections were often diagnosed using video otoscopy where the parent did the ear exam and transmitted images to the provider. Click Here. This approach relies on inexperienced parents to do an accurate exam, which is not ideal.
- Emergency CareUrgent and emergent services are those which require a decision prior to the next business day, generally when a child is ill and a decision needs to be made regarding a trip to the emergency room
- Constipation
- Infectious DiseasesIn this 5-year study, we will be administering flu and COVID vaccines during the fall season and looking at immune protection. When you read about CDC surveillance data for infectious diseases, 1/7
- Urinary Incontinence
- Diarrhea
- Pneumonia
- ImmunizationsWe have modified the vaccination schedule to insure that there are no more than 2 vaccines given during this period
- Pregnancy
- Labor and DeliveryThe first 2 months are the hardest 2 months. Everything is new no matter how many children have come before. And while you love your child, you often don’t have a clue about what to do with a whole host of different issues. Moreover, moms are aching from labor and delivery (both vaginal and c sections) and exhausted from the frequent feeds
- Internal MedicineEvery kind of medicine or therapy that we use in pediatric and internal medicine practices throughout the country has to first be carefully examined to be sure it is safe and helpful for everyone. The clinical research process is the only way to develop these newer and better medicines.
- Cervical CancerHuman Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine studies that will help eliminate cervical cancer in women and mouth and anal cancer in men
- Urinary Tract InfectionIn a recent study of over 14,000 infants aged 8-60 days, the prevalence of urinary tract infection (UTI), bacterial blood infections (BBI) and bacterial meningitis (BM) were significantly lower in patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus than in the regular population (0.8% compared to 7.6% for UTI, 0.2% compared to 2.1% for BBI and <0.1% versus 0.5% for BM). When tests of inflammation were added, the incidence dropped to close to zero. Click Here.
- AutismIt wasn’t until the mid 2010s that melatonin began to be studied to help with pediatric sleep onset disorders (not being able to fall asleep). It was found to be particularly effective in children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy, autism and Down Syndrome. Click Here.

- Mental HealthRuthie Senders MSN, APRN, FNP joined our practice in 2021 as an advice nurse after serving in a similar capacity in a large New York City pediatric practice. Click Here. She, too, completed her NP training in our office and received her MSN in nursing at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She joined Senders Pediatrics as an NP in 2022 and has received focused training and mentoring from her father, Dr. Shelly Senders, to help provide clinical guidance to our patients with anxiety, depression and ADHD. Ruthie is available by Telehealth on Sunday mornings and throughout the day Monday through Thursday to help service our patients in need of urgent refills, as well as to provide both acute and chronic medical decision making in these areas. Her kindness and empathy, clinical rigor and outstanding follow-up have helped fill an important role in our growing behavioral health focus. As a reminder, while we transition patients to an adult provider at age 24, when necessary, we continue to provide for the mental health needs for our patients until age 30
- PsychiatryParent Coaching is not “therapy” and is not designed to replace or conflict with services provided by psychologists or social workers. In fact, some of our most consistent referrals come from the world of pediatric psychiatry, psychology and social work.
- Insomnia
- Behavioral HealthSenders Behavioral Health provides seamless integration between clinical and behavioral care. We are one of the only programs in Northeast Ohio where there are regular channels of communication between medical providers and behavioral health providers both in person and through an integrated Electronic Health Record (EHR). By being located in the same location, integrative care allows both sets of providers to coordinate treatment and care plans with a minimum of disruption and reduces the time and cost necessary to achieve optimal outcomes.

- MRIAccording to the “social homeostasis” theory, social interaction is actually hard-wired. In a 2020 study using functional MRI to look at the impact on the brain, 10 hours of forced social isolation resulted in lower happiness, higher discomfort and an increased motivation to seek social contact. And the area of the midbrain that was affected was the same area impacted by hunger. Click Here.
- RadiologyThe take home message is that flight crews worldwide, astronauts in space flight exposed to cosmic radiation and radiologists and radiology techs and dentists and dental techs exposed to medical radiation would benefit from eating a diet high in beta carotene, cryptoxanthin and lutein-zeaxanthin.
- X-Rays
- Computed TomographyAnother source of free radicals comes from medical procedures. X rays of teeth and extremities are well under.01 mSv, and mammograms are generally under 0.5 mSv. Bone scans are 6.3 mSv. But the most ionizing radiation comes from CT scans. A CT scan of the abdomen looking for appendicitis is 1-10 mSv and one of the CT scans following a concussion is 1-5 mSv depending on the duration and the number of views. Click Here.
- Skin CancerExposure to cosmic radiation is not benign for flight personnel. Older studies in flight attendants and airplane pilots have shown increased associations of certain cancers from occupational exposure to CIR with evidence of a dose response relationship for melanoma. Click Here. A more recent study that compared cancer diagnoses reported by flight attendants and those reported by individuals of the same sex and socioeconomic status in non-flying occupations found “a higher prevalence of every cancer outcome relative to the general population including breast, uterine, cervical, gastrointestinal, thyroid, melanoma and non-melanoma cancers.” The longer flight attendants were on the job, the greater the risk of skin cancer.
