General Info
What is a Birth Center Because birth progresses safer without standard obstetrical interventions, birth centers are designed to work with a woman's own body to allow gentle safe deliveries. At a birth center pregnant women are not treated like they are sick. Birth is a normal process in a woman's life and it should be treated like a safe and miraculous event. Carolina WaterBirth is considered a freestanding birth center. This means that we are not affiliated with any hospital. Unlike hospitals, that actually make more money when a woman gets a cesarean or has a sick baby, we only deliver for healthy women and babies. It is to our and your benefit to keep women healthy. We specialize in preventive care by offering comprehensive childbirth education and plenty of face-to-face counseling.

Provided by YP.comAfter a horrifying hospital experience with my first child, I was understandably nervous to find out I was pregnant again. Imagine my surprise to find out that here, in South Carolina, we were fortunate enough to have the option of having a midwife instead. My second child's birth was simply the most amazing experience of my life, and I owe it all to my highly trained and experienced midwife and her staff. Sandy was absolutely wonderful- very caring and answered all our questions. She is very pro family and let both our seven and two year old daughters feel involved through out the whole process. If we have another child, we will most certainly go with Carolina Water Birth again.

Provided by YP.comMy husband and I had an AMAZING experience delivering my daughter at CW. It was one of the most beautiful days of my life. I labored mostly at home, went to the birthing center and two hours later she was born. Sandy talked me through the pushing and was so patient and kind to me during the whole time we were there.
I am not a fancy person so the fact that the location doesn't look like the Pottery Barn just tells me that Sandy and her team use their resources for what matters, and they aren't too concerned about what color the walls are. Its comfortable, and feels like home to me. Midwives don't make much money and are against a LOT of odds with state and federal laws and battle insurance companies every day to get paid. They really have to love what they do and trust me, Sandy could not be more passionate about what she does.
This was my second birth, my first was at a hospital and was a nightmare as far as the labor and delivery were concerned. Sandy educated me very well and allowed me to take control of my own pregnancy and taught me to listen to my body, which most OB doctors NEVER do. It is all what you make of it. As far as her personality, what do you expect? To hold your hand and read you a bedtime story? No. She delivers babies, people. She's not your Grandma. You gotta be made of tough stuff to be a midwife. And you have to be willing to tell your mommies-to-be how it is, which Sandy is VERY good at.
Natural childbirth isn't for everyone. I have friends who just can't wrap their minds around the idea and have been scared into thinking that hospitals know everything and interventions don't cause more problems than they solve. And finding the right midwife is important. Sandy is really good at what she does. She really cares about Mamas and babies and healthy, natural births. There is nothing compared to delivering your baby naturally NOTHING. It is beyond euphoric and Carolina Waterbirth can help you achieve that. The 2nd person I will call if I ever become pregnant again is Sandy Glenn.

Provided by YP.comThis is a great safe place to have your baby. They are very professional yet make you feel very safe. Sandy really knows what she is doing and is very helpful and informative about labor, birth and what to expect in post partum. The place is really pretty. I love her corner jet tub. This is just a serene and safe place to do both labor and delivery.

Provided by YPmobileI gave CWB four stars because I was very happy with the job Sandy did with delivering my baby. My baby was almost 10 pounds, and I didn't tear except for a little bit on the inside (did I mention his hand came out with his head??!). I pushed for two hours, and Sandy was very patient and encouraging the whole time. She coached with every push, which made me feel confident I could get him out. For me this was the most important part of the whole pregnancy, birth, and postpartum process. This was my first birth, and I plan to use CWB in the future if I am blessed with more children.
That being said, professionalism and friendliness are also a really big deal for me. Often I felt like I was just another woman having a baby. After some appointments I wished I hadn't asked some of my questions or opened up about how we were parenting our baby because I ended up feeling dumb for not knowing all that went along with having a baby before having one. I am sensitive, so I chalk this up to me needing to work on developing thicker skin and our personalities not clicking.
Again, I'm happy with my experience and plan to use this birth center in the future.

Provided by YP.comThis was my 2nd birth, but 1st time to go all natural and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Sandy is amazing, so knowledgeable and only wants the best for you and your baby. She has the best tips all throughout your pregnancy and makes you feel at home as soon as you meet her. I tried to do it natural at the hospital and they say you can, but they definitely pressure you to get an epidural. I finally had to tell them to stop asking! No one believes that this is what you truly want at the hospital and they are blinded by all of their regulations and liability that I don't feel like they listen to the mother. Sandy at Carolina Water birth put me in control of my birth. She let the whole thing be about me and my husband. (He was so impressed by her performance with delivering in the water by the way.) And he got to catch my son himself! Such a special moment we will keep with us forever. The best thing is, she lets us hang out with him for a long time while we wait for his umbilical to stop pulsing. (It's called Delayed cord cutting) It is so calming to be in that place and go relax on the bed after laboring in the water. If we have a 3rd baby, I definitely want Sandy to take care of me again.

Provided by YP.comI'm surprised at the two previous reviews. I think some of their issues must have been just a personality clash; a midwife/client relationship is very intense and not all match up well, no matter how good the midwife's skill level.
My experience was very different. I started seeing Sandy when I was six months pregnant. She was fun, friendly, and willing to take as much time as I wanted to go over anything and everything. I live 45 minutes away and when I called her and told her I thought the baby was going to come tonight, at first I suggested I wait a little longer at home, but when I reminded her that I tend to have my babies fast (this was my eighth, my 4 birth with a midwife and 1st with Sandy) she told me to come right in. The birth went well, she was attentive and encouraging, her facility is comfortable for both the mother and guests, her helpers are great. If I have another, I will use her again.

Provided by YP.comIf there were a zero rating level, that is what I would rate Carolina Waterbirth. I read the last reviewer, and I could not agree more about Sandy. She crosses the line with a rude attitude, does not prepare you,and tries to make you feel like an idiot if you don't know whats going on. This led to my newborn baby ending up in NICU at Memorial, and thank God for them. Sandy told me I had come in too early during my labor...and I live an hour away. I basically begged her to stay there at the birthing center because I felt like I was going to have this baby any minute. She kept pressing the issue with my husband and my doula, so we got in the car and drove off. Once home, I started to push, the baby started to come....and Sandy was on the phone with my doula asking ME what I wanted to do...have the baby in my bathroom or drive an hour while closing my legs to have the baby there. I was in no condition to make decisions at this point! I decided to drive back...an HOUR...holding back the urge to push. When I got to CWB I got in the water pushed once and my baby was out, but poor baby wouldn't breathe. he was purple for 6 hours, and that witch didn't advise us on ANYTHING. She had the nerVe to tell my mother that she usually didn't let mothers stay there that long....a very "sandy" comment. The DR. was scheduled to be there that morning (thank God) and said we should go to the NICU. Remy recovered, but I feel horrible about my birth experience...and felt guilty for a long time about my baby having to go through all that pain entering this world. There is much more I could write. The warning signs are there....the facility looks ghetto, and the quality of midwifery matches the garbage dump that is outside the door you have to walk past every time you go for a visit. It's worse than trashy, Carolina Waterbirth is dangerous. Listen to your instincts and get out of there the moment those red flags start going up. ZERO rating from me.

Provided by YP.comMy Experience with Sandy Glenn, Secretary Jody and Assistant Midwife Valerie at Carolina Waterbirth in Simpsonville, SC (an excerpt)
I began as a patient when I was 3 months pregnant, in 2010. The care and training were adequate, and I felt very well prepared for the birth.
...The best part is this. No one ever went over my post-partum care before the birth. I went to my parent’s house Sunday afternoon, because I felt fine. I had called Sandy and she called me back while we were there. She found out I was there and IMMEDIATELY raised her voice to me and told me, in a very rude and unnecessarily loud way, that I shouldn’t have left the house for TWO WEEKS! Her own paperwork said three days! On top of which, if it was so important and so dangerous, then why had someone not specifically made a point of explaining that to myself or my husband? I told her I was unaware of that (indicating that I had not been told) and she ignored it altogether. She goes on to say,”something could fall out of your v*****.” She did not explain uterine prolapse, did not tell me it was extremely unlikely that I would experience it (since I had done minimal walking/exerting, and it was my first child). So we went home, and as she left from her visit she said not to leave the bed for two weeks and then, over her shoulder,”Something could fall out of your v*****, I’m not kidding! And it’s almost impossible to fix.” She didn’t even bother to tell me it was very unlikely to become fatal. So, now I’m afraid I’m going to die.
Beware this woman and her secretary. Her behavior crossed a line from inappropriate to downright abusive. I do not know why she felt compelled to treat me so, but all I care about is warning others before it happens to them.
