Established in 1886, the Seattle Police Department is one of the most famous police agencies in the United States. It employs more than 1,200 sworn law enforcement officers and over 700 civilian officers. The department prevents crime, enforces law and supports public safety services. The Seattle Police Department also operates child welfare, drug prevention and safe driving programs. Its traffic unit prevents vehicle collisions, investigates road accidents and responds to high-priority patrol calls. The department s harbor patrol unit investigates water-related accidents and conducts dive searches. Its communication center handles all calls for police, fire and medical emergencies within the city. The Seattle Police Department is certified by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
