- Emergency CareI have been wearing glasses for over 20 years. No brand of contact lenses provided any bit of comfort. Within a matter of minutes that problem had been solved. After my time spent healing and recovering I am now able to look at my family, friends, and my community so clearly. Honestly, it’s as if I am seeing everything again for the very first time. Dr. Schwartz – words cannot describe how thankful I am to you and your entire staff. You’ve given me the ability to observe my world in great detail. Given my career path in EMS and my pursuit of becoming an emergency room physician assistant, I wanted to correct my vision. There were times while working in EMS where my glasses got in the way–combative patients swinging fists, trying to look through a scope, and even moments where my glasses would fall off my face during code situations etc. You’ve solved that problem. Again, thank you so much. You guys are absolutely awesome before, during, and after the procedure. You keep the patient very well informed and educated. Any questions or concerns that I had were addressed by experienced and knowledgeable staff members. I was always aware and appreciative of your staff’s professionalism as soon as I walked through the front door.
- GlaucomaLocated at the back of the eye, the optic nerve has the important responsibility of passing visual information to the brain. Glaucoma is a serious eye condition in which increased ocular pressure harms the optic nerve and lessens the patient’s vision. Untreated, glaucoma can cause severe vision loss and even blindness.
- OphthalmologySchwartz Laser Eye Center is a full-service ophthalmology practice that can meet the eye care needs of you and your entire family. We have services designed to treat common to complex visual conditions. Our locations house optical facilities for all of your glasses and contact lens needs, as well as cosmetic services to rejuvenate your facial appearance.
- Macular DegenerationMacular degeneration is the breakdown of the macula, or the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. Although there is no cure for macular degeneration, it is important for an ophthalmologist to evaluate it and recommend management strategies (such as nutritional supplements and dietary changes).
- Laser Eye SurgeryPRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is very similar to LASIK except that Dr. Schwartz will not create a flap prior to performing the laser vision correction. A computerized excimer laser is used with both procedures to reshape the surface of the cornea, by removing a microscopic layer of corneal tissue.
- CataractsAccording to the National Institutes of Health, cataracts affect more than half of all Americans over the age of 80, and are very common in people over the age of 50. However, despite the prevalence of this condition, many people aren’t exactly sure what cataracts are, which can make them difficult to recognize in the early stages. Here we provide a brief overview of cataracts, the different types and the symptoms that accompany them, and some of the intraocular lenses we have to treat them. To learn more about cataracts from Dr. Schwartz, contact our Scottsdale, Glendale or Mesa eye care center today.
- Cataract SurgeryClear lens exchange is nearly identical to cataract surgery. It usually takes less than 10 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can return home the day of your procedure. Each eye is treated separately, typically a few weeks apart. To ensure your complete comfort, you will receive twilight anesthesia (a mild sedative that prevents pain and anxiety) as well as medicated drops to numb the eyes.
- Eye ExamContact lenses alter the shape of the cornea. It is important that your cornea return to its original shape in order to provide accurate testing during the Complete Eye Exam. This also applies to the precision of the laser treatment.

- Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes in which the blood vessels of the retina leak (sometimes causing permanent damage). Procedures such as vitrectomy or laser treatment can seal off the abnormal blood vessels and restore sight. The condition should be closely monitored by Dr. Schwartz to prevent it from progressing and causing permanent vision loss.
- UltrasoundDepending on your preferences, you may receive a sedative in addition to the standard local anesthetic delivered via eye drops. A device will be put in place to prevent blinking, allowing your surgeon unobstructed access to the eye. During the surgery Dr. Schwartz or Dr. Birdsong makes a small incision in the cornea through which the clouded lens is broken up using a needle-thin ultrasound probe, the resulting debris is suctioned out, and the IOL is inserted. The experience is virtually painless; most patients report feeling only momentary pressure on the eye. You may require self-sealing sutures for the incision.
