In 1995, Nancy began the study of a traditional martial art at The Academy of Southern Chinese Gung Fu in Holland, NY. The curriculum included the study of acupuncture meridians and the traditional lifestyle of the Chinese martial artist. In China, years ago, martial artists were trained in acupuncture and were expected to be healers, counselors, herbalists and socially responsible to serve their community. For Nancy, this had a strong influence on the development of a career path. Acupuncture is based upon an ancient Chinese system of meridians (channels) through which bioelectric current travels to all parts of the body. This system is very similar to the vascular system but it is invisible and immeasurable and therefore is not known to western science. According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, illness is the result when the flow of energy in these meridians becomes obstructed. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can restore the healthy balance of energy in these meridians to restore health. While in college in New York, Nancy worked where she learned about healthful lifestyle choices, supplements and herbal remedies. This inspired her interest in natural medicine and Oriental Nutrition.
