  Treatment for skin cancer varies according to the location, extent, and aggressiveness of the cancer and the patient’s general health. In most cases, Dr. Abrams will take a biopsy of the abnormal tissue. The tissue is sent to a laboratory and examined under a microscope by a dermatopathologist to determine whether it is malignant or benign.

• Acne Treatment
  Patients usually require at least 3 treatments spaced at 3 week intervals to see significant improvement (80% or greater) for months at a time. Depending on the severity of the condition, the number and strength of the required treatments will vary. After achieving long term reduction in acne lesions, infrequent treatments can be done to maintain long term efficacy. Unfortunately, as of now medical insurances do not cover this form of acne treatment.

  Atopic dermatitis (Also called eczema.) – a skin disorder that is characterized by itching, scaling, thickening of the skin, and is usually located on the face, elbows, knees, and arms.

  This innovative therapy is a two-step process. First, the affected areas are treated with a topical solution called Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA).  ALA is a “natural” product found in all humans throughout the body. It is a precursor for hemoglobin synthesis. This medication is left on for approximately 15 minutes. Then, the patient is exposed to a light known as the Blue-U for 6 minutes. The Blue-U uses a specific non-damaging wavelength that when combined with ALA destroys certain precancerous lesions and the bacteria associated with acne.

  Dr. Abrams is recognized as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. The osteopathic philosophy focuses on a holistic approach to practicing medicine, meaning treating the patient as a whole—not just the symptoms or injuries. This holistic approach acknowledges that all the body systems are interconnected and that the musculoskeletal system is especially important in reflecting and affecting the condition of all the other systems. Osteopathic schools require up to 200 hours of manipulation training on top of the medical coursework, demonstrating the emphasis placed on the musculoskeletal system. This training teaches students manual therapy and manipulation techniques, adding another tool to traditional forms of diagnosis and treatment to effectively care for patients.
