Established in 1956, James Monroe Elementary School offers a range of educational programs to more than 440 students in kindergarten through grade five. Its curriculum includes music, math, language arts, science and English. The school maintains a library and media center that stocks books and periodicals. It also conducts classes in special and physical education, as well as provides food services. In addition, James Monroe Elementary School maintains a parent-teacher organization that conducts several fundraising events and programs. The school operates a student council and book and tolerance clubs. It employs a nurse, speech and occupational therapists and is located in San Leandro, Calif. It is a part of the San Leandro Unified School District, which additionally serves over 8,700 students in nearly 10 schools.
