Todd W. Costantini, MD, is a board-certified surgical intensivist. He is the assistant director of UC San Diego Health's http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/surgery/trauma-burn/trauma-center/Pages/default.aspx, which provides the highest quality of comprehensive care for patients who have been severely injured from car accidents, falls, violence, gunshot wounds, fires and burns, and drowning.Dr. Costantini also cares for critically ill patients at UC San Diego Medical Center, Thornton Pavilion, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center. He has an elective general surgery practice and is available for consultation in his outpatient clinic on the Hillcrest campus. As an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Costantini instructs medical students, residents and fellows within the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His clinical research interests include improving deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis in trauma and surgery patients.Dr. Costantini has several ongoing active clinical and translational research projects. His research studying the inflammatory response to injury has been funded by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) Research and Education Scholarship, the American College of Surgeons C. James Carrico Faculty Research Scholarship, and the American Burn Association. Dr. Costantini is also leading a multi-center study sponsored by the AAST to define management strategies for patients with hemorrhage from severe pelvic fractures.He completed a fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care, and a residency in general surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. During his final year of training, Dr. Costantini was selected for his leadership abilities to serve as the administrative chief resident. He earned his medical degree from University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Costantini is board-certified in surgery and surgical critical care. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
