Since joining the UC San Diego faculty in 2000, Dr. Letendre has conducted patient-oriented research on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic central nervous system infections, primarily HIV and HCV. He is also an active investigator in the UC San Diego unit of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). Dr. Letendre has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals including AIDS, Neurology, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Archives of Neurology, and Journal of Infectious Diseases.Dr. Letendre has focused his research efforts on neurologic infections and, in particular, translational investigations of the neurologic complications of HIV infection. In collaboration with the UC San Diego HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center, Dr. Letendre conducts treatment trials of neurocognitively impaired HIV-infected individuals and analyzes their response to therapy, the pharmacokinetics of antiretrovirals, and the CSF concentrations of biomarkers.
