Ruth Waterman, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist. She provides anesthesia for patients undergoing surgical or therapeutic procedures while monitoring the patients condition and supporting vital organ functions. As an anesthesiologist, she also diagnoses and treats both acute and chronic pain, as well as provide medical management for patients with critical illnesses and severe injuries. As an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Waterman instructs medical students, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research interests include the study of stem cells and stem cell-based therapies to help patients with pain. Her pioneering studies with the use of anti-inflammatory stem cells for the treatment of pain have won awards, including the Translational Medicine Research award. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and books, including PLOS ONE and Stem Cell Translational Medicine. Dr. Waterman is the cofounder and CMO of Commence Bio, a company that specializes in next generation stem cell therapy, cancer immunotherapy, stem cells, and inflammation. She holds a patent in Germ-Resistant Communication and Data Transfer/Entry Products" that is used in products manufactured by Fellowes, Inc. and by ThyssenKrupp. She completed a fellowship in anesthesiology at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. She completed her residency at Tulane University School of Medicine, where she was recognized as intern of the year. Dr. Waterman earned her medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and holds a master's degree in biology from the University of New Orleans. She is board certified in anesthesiology. Dr. Waterman is the recipient of UC San Diego Healths Physician of the Year award and was named a top doctor in the annual San Diego Magazine's Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.
