Raul Coimbra, MD, is an internationally recognized trauma surgeon who specializes in critical care and acute surgery. He is the surgeon-in-chief of UC San Diego Medical Center and director of the http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/surgery/trauma-burn/trauma-center/Pages/default.aspx.Dr. Coimbra has played a significant role in building the regions first Level-1 Trauma Center into one of the top programs in the nation, as well as a model for trauma centers around the world. His vision and dedication have resulted in the opening of a new, state-of-the art trauma resuscitation unit at UC San Diego Medical Center, which has improved the efficiency for surgeons and addresses the continued growth of the trauma program and commitment of the community it serves in southwest San Diego.As the executive vice chair in the Department of Surgery and chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery, Dr. Coimbra instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His clinical research interests include hypertonicity as it affects the immune system, decreases post-traumatic organ dysfunction and injury, and intestinal barrier injury and intestinal inflammation.Dr. Coimbra has coauthored many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, some of which have appeared in The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Surgery and Shock, among others.He completed his residency training in general and peripheral vascular surgery at the Santa Casa School of Medicine in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he also earned his medical and doctoral degree. Dr. Coimbra is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Dr. Coimbra is the executive director for the World Coalition for Trauma Care and chair of the Data and Trauma Registry Committee of the Division of Injury of the World Health Organization (WHO).
