- GlaucomaYou can’t. That’s what is so scary about this disease: nothing hurts and you may see well straight ahead, it just slowly takes away your side vision until you see tunnel vision or you go blind altogether. Glaucoma can run in families, but can also happen with no familial history whatsoever. You should be checked every year for this and perhaps more frequently if you are in a high risk category based on family history, ethnicity or certain ocular signs.
- OphthalmologyIn a world of assembly-line eye exams at most optometry and ophthalmology offices, Hospitality Eyecare Center guides you through a personally customized experience that is attuned to both you as an individual, as well as to your eye health, visual function and lifestyle needs. We want you to truly “see to live™” and we know that your life’s visual needs are as unique as you are!
- Macular DegenerationYes, there are several things that can be helpful. Firstly, be sure to visit your eye doctor yearly, or more frequently if advised to do so. If you are a smoker, you should know that there is a ten times higher risk of blindness in macular degeneration patients who smoke versus those who do not: for the sake of your vision, please break the habit. You should definitely be wearing polarized sun protection whenever you are outdoors, take a multivitamin every day, be sure to get lots of bright colored fruits and vegetables in your diet, drink plenty of water and maintain an otherwise healthy lifestyle with appropriate exercise, etc.

- AutismVision and visual function problems are common in those who have a diagnosis on the autism spectrum and can easily be overlooked or thought to be part of the other symptoms of the disorder. Having a visual evaluation by a Behavioral Optometrist may lead to treatment that often has a positive ripple effect on sensory development and integration.
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)ADD and ADHD is one of the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorders, with 8.7% of children between the ages of 8 and 15 years being labeled as such. Now, while ADD and ADHD are real disorders, it is interesting to note that the DSM diagnoses codes used to make the definitive diagnoses are almost identical to the signs and symptoms of a learning-related vision problem. Dr. Tamano Fletcher, as a Behavioral Optometrist, will do a thorough assessment to determine the extent of any visual component in your child’s challenges.

- Diabetic RetinopathyDiabetic Retinopathy— Diabetes can have many negative effects on the body as a whole and specifically on the eyes. The longer one has diabetes, the higher the risk of ocular involvement. Also, if blood sugar levels are not controlled well, the risk of ocular involvement may increase. Those with diabetes must absolutely get a comprehensive eye examination every year, including retinal photos and dilated examination. If Dr. Tamano Fletcher notes any diabetic changes in the eyes, she may request that you come in more frequently than once yearly. It is typically not necessary at this point to see an eye specialist/ ophthalmologist unless ocular involvement becomes extensive – Dr. Tamano Fletcher will monitor your ocular health and will ensure your timely referral to the right eye specialist if the need arises.
- Physical TherapyBehavioral Vision Assessment and Treatment / Vision Therapy – Dr. Tamano Fletcher evaluates each patient’s basic visual functionality with twelve tests. If this testing indicates a problem, Dr. Tamano Fletcher will explain the results and may recommend further testing, a Functional Vision Evaluation. The Functional Vision Evaluation is a battery of testing, taking between one and one-and-a-half hours to complete. The tests are standardized so as to give a complete picture of every area of eye function. Dr. Tamano Fletcher will develop a plan of treatment for your needs based on these results and spend time reviewing them until you understand and feel comfortable with the results and recommendations. Treatment, in many cases, may require a Vision Therapy training program, similar to Physical Therapy but for the eyes. Please call and ask to speak with Dr. Tamano Fletcher if you have any questions.
