Alamo Area Mutual Housing Association ( AAMHA ) is a private, nonprofit, 501 ( c ) 3 organization that was founded in 1990 1990 to serve families in San Antonio and Bexar County. Its mission is to develop, own and manage quality affordable housing in a community environment that promotes resident education, self-sufficiency, leadership and volunteerism through successful partnerships.AAMHA started operations with two properties purchased from Resolution Trust Corporation at discounted prices. Resident services were added later using VISTA volunteers; staff was added to take services to another level. Over the years, additional multi-family properties were purchased, and others were constructed.The apartment communities owned by AAMHA are operated as non-traditional mutual housing: residents participate at the property and board level to make decisions that have an impact on their everyday lives. At each community, residents develop property standards, participate in planning for physical improvements and work with ownership and management to make amenity enhancements. AAMHA currently owns and operates 1, 116 multifamily units at eight properties throughout the San Antonio and Bexar County area.Alamo Area Mutual Housing Association provides on-site educational and community building programs at each of its individual communities through a dedicated Learning Center with Computer Technology Labs and a full-time professional resident coordinator. These programs and services allow residents the opportunity to take advantage of educational and asset building activities without the barriers of time and transportation.In fact, AAMHA is considered nationally as a leader in resident-enrichment programs, having helped establish national standards for such programs through NeighborWorks Multifamily Initiative's Learning Center Consortium. It has even provided guidance to the Iowa Public Housing Authority, Enterprise Foundation, American Association of Service Coordinators and was honored by the City of San Antonio with a 2006 Pioneer Award for Excellence in Support Services for its Learning Center and Resident Programs. It has also been recognized nationally by The Ford Foundation.Alamo Area Mutual Housing Association builds communities of business partners to expand the capability and capacity of its staff. These partners include professionals in multi-family apartment management, architecture, construction management, finance, interior design, marketing and public relations,and other areas as the need arises for specific projects. This business model has allowed AAMHA to address specific areas of expertise as needed for specific development projects.Alamo Area Mutual Housing Association is a Chartered member of the national NeighborWorks Network of Community Based Organizations. NeighborWorks ( www.nw.org ) supports community based Community Development Corporations that develop quality affordable multi-family and single-family housing. It was established by Congress in the late 1970s to provide support, funding and technical assistance to affiliates.AAMHA's leadership has served on NeighborWorks Multifamily Initiative's Learning Center Consortium and helped develop national standards for resident programs, including outcome measurements.Alamo Area Mutual Housing Association, a nationally recognized leader in multi-family affordable housing development; which is headed by Jennifer Gonzalez, its Executive Director, who has been with the organization since 1997, and created AAMHA's nationally acknowledged residents services program. She leads a staff of 15 employees and 30 staff members from its real estate property management company, Alpha Barnes Real Estate Services.A working board of 15 directors is comprised of volunteer community, governmental and business representatives, and a resident majority who come from AAMHA communities and surrounding neighborhoods.
