Mark W. Nelson, M.D. is a Board Certified Rheumatologist, as well as a Board Certified Doctor of Internal Medicine. Dr. Nelson chose to specialize in rheumatology while in the military, and has continued his pursuit of expertise in the treatment of arthritis, diseases of the joints, autoimmune diseases, connective tissue diseases, and pain management. He actively participates in continuing education courses, as well as convention meetings, trainings, and research in order to keep current with the latest advances in the fast-paced field of rheumatology. Dr. Nelson did one year of internship and two years of residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. During his last year of residency he was appointed Chief Resident. Dr. Nelson was Board Certified in Internal Medicine in 1979. Dr. Nelson trained to become a specialist in rheumatology by spending two years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He became Board Certified in Rheumatology in 1982 . He served as Chief of Rheumatology for four years at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, and was an advisor to the Lupus Foundation there. He started his private practice in 1985 in San Antonio, Texas.
