Smith s Food & Drug Centers is a division of the Kroger Company, one of the nation s largest food retailers. Smith s operates approximately 125 combination food and drug stores in seven Western states, including 45 stores in Utah and 25 stores and more than 2,000 employees in the Las Vegas area alone. The company s divisional headquarters is located in Salt Lake City. Founder Dee Smith learned the grocery trade in his father s small store in Brigham City, Utah, beginning in 1932. He started his own store in 1948. Other Kroger companies include Ralph s, City Market, Baker s, Fred Meyer and Hilander.
