• Colonoscopy
  A colonoscopy is a visual examination of the entire large intestine (also called the colon) using a lighted, flexible colonoscope. To be certain you are comfortable and relaxed, you will be sedated through an IV. In fact, most patients are asleep during the entire process and remember little to nothing about it.

  Dr. Ponec graduated from Stanford University and earned his Medical Degree at the University of Southern California. His Internal Medicine training was at UCLA. He completed his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1997. Full Resume

  Dr. Bhavan earned her Bachelor of Science Degree at University of Oregon in Eugene, and followed up at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon and a fellowship at Saint Louis University. After a stint in Gastroenterology at Trinity Clinic in Tyler Texas, she joined Salem Gastro in 2015. Full Resume
• Colon Cancer
  You should feel nothing when a biopsy or polyp is taken. While the overwhelming majority of polyps are harmless, your physician will have it tested and confirm your results with you. Results are usually available within one week, depending on the day of the week of your procedure. Furthermore, since most colon cancer starts as a benign polyp, when these are removed, the chances of them growing into cancer is reduced.

  Established in 1979, Salem Gastro is independently owned, operated, and under the direction of our physician shareholders who also own and operate Salem Endoscopy Center, adjacent to our clinic. This arrangement makes it convenient for our patients because their endoscopy procedure will be under their physician’s direction in the same safe, friendly and relaxed environment that we provide at Salem Gastro.
