General Info

The original building on this site, which still stands, was constructed in 1857 as a government Indian agency building for the Potawatomi Indians at the St. Mary's Mission. The building was then used as a Pay Station for various payments by the United States government to the Potawatomi. The final payment to the Indians was made from this building in 1870. The Pay Station building was entered into the National Registry of Historic places in 1972. Today this original building, as well as the two additional buildings, preserve and display items from the early days of the St. Mary's Mission, the original St. Marys College, the City of St. Marys and the surrounding area. The items date from the late 1840s to present day. The St. Marys Historical Society, founded in 1969, is devoted to preserving the history of St. Marys and the surrounding community. The museum is open daily from 1:00 P.M until 4:00 P.M. from Memorial Day until Labor Day and other times by appointment. The original building on this site, which still stands, was constructed in 1857 as a government Indian agency building for the Potawatomi Indians at the St. Mary's Mission.
