General Info
The Mackinac Bridge, developed under the Mackinac Bridge Authority, is the world's longest suspension bridge between cable anchorages. More than 100 million crossings have occurred over the bridge designed by the engineer Dr. David B. Steinman. The total length of the Mackinac Bridge is five miles. It connects St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, Michigan. 2005 marked the 48th Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. The Mackinac Bridge Authority, the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Mackinaw Area Chamber of Commerce sponsor this event. Mackinac Bridge Authority was appointed in 1950. The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957, according to schedule, despite the many hazards of marine construction over the turbulent Straits of Mackinac.
