General Info
Congregation Rodeph Sholom was established in 1875, and our building was built in 1937-38. We are a reform congregation and are affiliated with the Union of Reform Congregations. We have 33 Jewish families and have Shabbat services two times per month. Our rabbi, Judith Beiner, comes in from Atlanta for monthly Shabbat services, torah study, adult education, religious school, and bar/bat mitzvah training. He is also available for life cycle events. Lay leadership services are also held monthly. On the remaining Friday evenings, we hold adult education sessions in conjunction with covered dish dinners. High Holiday services, usually led by various visiting rabbis, are held erev Rosh Hashanah and the following morning, Kol Nidrei and Yom Kippur services the following day, including Yitzkor services in the afternoon. Please call for specific service information. Religious school is held weekly during the school year and is taught by parent volunteers. All parents are encouraged to be a part of our religious school, and we incorporate family education throughout the year. We hold a congregational seder for the second night of Passover and frequently have a congregational break fast following Yom Kippur services. Hannukah is celebrated with a community latke party, and we have a picnic every spring, usually coinciding with the conclusion of religious school. Rodeph Sholom Sisterhood meets regularly and assists with publishing our directory, developing our hospitality schedule for the rabbi and for onegs following Shabbat services, supports purchase of teaching materials for religious school, and plans various projects, depending on our needs for that year. Our Shabbat services are one of the most unique factors of our Synagogue. Due to our having a part time Rabbi, our services are very unique. Our Rabbi conducts services once a month and during the course of the rest of the weekend we have adult education and other activities to learn more about Judaism, philosophy and ourselves. When the Rabbi is not in town, we have our own services conducted by members of the Synagogue. The result is that every service is unique and special from all the others. There is a break down of the parts of the service here. This may be of interest to those of you who wish to learn a little bit more about its different parts.
