In December 2017 our daycare closed and we moved our children to White Rose Academy in Rochester Hills in January 2018.Almost immediately, we had some issues where different staff members would give us different stories and they wouldn't match up at all with what we were told by our children. I initially gave the center the benefit of the doubt, as young children can often have skewed perspectives and I really thought the good reviews I had read of the center and the clean licensing file showed this must be quality care. Sadly, I no longer believe this is the case.On the second day of attendance my four year old informed me he was not allowed to nap because he didn't eat his lunch. He also said that the teacher got very upset and made him stand up to finish eating his vegtable. He eventually was allowed to spit them out, but by that time, nap time was over. I e-mailed Sandra Hulme, the owner of the daycare, and she said they can't allow the children to lay down with food in their mouth, and she denied that he was punished by being made to stand. I figured it was a miscommunication between him, his teachers, and me.Two weeks into being at Rose Academy I was very excited for my child to celebrate his birrthday at the center as I was hoping this would help him to feel more included in his new environment. When I picked him up, the teacher gave me several leftover cupcakes and told me they did not allow my son to eat one of his own birthday cupcakes. The teacher again punished my child for not eating all the vegetables they placed on his plate at lunch. The teacher explained they still celebrated his birthday - by sitting around him and singing to him, followed by each of the other children eating one of HIS cupcakes while he was given nothing. As she told me this, my child chimed in with "And I'm not upset, Mommy, because Ms. Sandra (the owner) said not to be upset."I asked her again "So because he wouldn't eat corn, he didn't get one of his birthday cupcakes?" In front of him, she told me he was one of the most stubborn children she had ever met, he was just too stubborn and wouldn't eat his corn. I wanted him to feel more a part of his new school and instead he was further ostracized. This was enough for me to begin the search for a new daycare, but I wanted to be cautious about putting the boys through another difficult transition. After this incident, I attempted to clarify the policies so we would understand. I was told snacks are not withheld due to lunch. One week later, another child in Jeremiah's class had a birthday that day. My child told me the other kids had cupcakes, but he did not because he didn't finish his lunch. He said he told the teacher he was hungry, and he was given an unpeeled orange. It wasn't until he bit into the peel that they told him oranges need to be peeled, and assisted him in doing so.The following week my child told me he gets so tired at daycare because he's never allowed to nap because he won't finish his entire meal. WHAT? I had been told that he doesn't always nap because he doesn't always fall asleep, but other than the first day, I had been told he was napping.I attempted to clarify the food policy on 3 separate occasions. This center is with holding food for punishment, withholding naps for punishment, and are creating rules surrounding snacks and meals that are not published in the handbook.Within one month, on six separate days, the door has been unlocked at pick-up or drop-off. I understand it is inconvenient for the teachers to have to continue getting up to let parents in, but this is a major security risk. Nathaniel (age 3) ran out to the parking lot twice! Keep in mind the center is right on a very busy road!On what would be my boys' last day, my 5 year old reported that the owner told him she was "very angry" with him for not eating his chicken sandwich and yelled at him. After pulling the boys and telling them they wouldn't be going back, my three year old told
