Public Works is one of the departments operated by the city government of Roanoke, Va. The department includes various divisions, such as engineering, environmental management, solid waste management and transportation. It coordinates the activities of several city departments and serves all residents, businesses and visitors in the city. The department s environmental management division promotes and protects the natural environment that includes rivers, parkways, lakes and parks. Its engineering division is responsible for the design and construction of city's public infrastructure, including the street and water systems, storm drains, bridges and the sewer system. The department s division for solid waste management provides a variety of services, such as collection of residential refuse, bulk and brush, recycling, commercial refuse collection and seasonal collection of leaves. Its transportation division maintains the transportation infrastructure in the city.
