Dr. Apel graduated with honors from Stritch School of Medicine Loyola University Chicago before completing an internship in the Department of Surgery and residency and hand surgery fellowship in orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Torontos Hospital for Sick Children.Dr. Apel joined Carilion Clinics Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences in 2015, where he specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery and pediatric orthopaedic surgery. He is assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and has won awards for both academic excellence and resident teaching. Dr. Apel is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.Dr. Apel emphasizes open communication and accountability in his patient practice.I provide my patients with a thorough, honest and compassionate assessment.
