General Info
Susan Lee, MD, is the Chief of Breast Surgery at Peconic Bay Medical Center, where she specializes in breast disease, including breast cancer and benign breast conditions. Both of Dr. Lee's parents were physicians-her mother an OB-GYN and her father an internal medicine specialist-so the influence was there from the start. "In college, I explored other career options," says Dr. Lee, "but in the end, being a physician was what I wanted to do."Dr. Lee received her medical degree from the University of Illinois, followed by a residency in general surgery for two years and then obstetrics and gynecology at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine. She also completed a fellowship in breast surgery at Brown University/Women and Infants Hospital. Before joining Northwell in 2018, Dr. Lee was Associate Director of the breast program at Winthrop University Hospital, an NYU hospital, and Acting Director of the Breast Health Center at New York-Presbyterian Queens, a Cornell University Hospital.Dr. Lee's main goal is to offer the latest in high quality breast care on eastern Long Island, so her patients don't feel as though they need to travel far from home. "We offer the best of both worlds," says Dr. Lee. "I work in a smaller hospital, so the care is more personal, yet patients still have access to Northwell's vast resources." She works with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, advanced care providers, nurse navigators, genetic counselors and other health care personnel to provide comprehensive services. Dr. Lee also offers a high-risk program for patients with increased risk of developing breast cancer, which includes genetic testing and surveillance.Dr. Lee is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is board certified. She attends and speaks at national and international meetings to stay current on the latest standards of care. In addition, she has held leadership positions on local, regional and national levels, and has published numerous articles and book chapters on breast disease."Breast cancer survivors make up the majority of cancer survivors in the country," says Dr. Lee. "And during an incredibly challenging time in their lives, our team is there to help them."
