I submitted an online request to become a volunteer at The Read Center and was told someone would call me back in a week. When I hadn't received a call after nine days, I phoned them, said I was interested in tutoring adults who needed help reading (I have a masters degree in business). I was told that I had just missed the training class for volunteers, and due to "weather concerns" the next one would not be held until February or March. I said that I was actively pursuing volunteer work and really didn't want to wait for 4 months for the next training class. When I said I was going to check into some opportunities with other organizations, she thanked me for calling and we ended the call. So, I suppose they really aren't too concerned about getting new volunteers...too bad.
