Clever Sys. brings behavioral testing into the twenty-first century, combining video tracking with patented behavior recognition technology to study behavior in animals as complex as humans and as simple as fruit flies. The first generation of automated behavioral testing relied on imprecise photobeams to detect large movements. Second-generation video tracking improved resolution and detection, but reduced the subject to a single point in space and lacked the ability to differentiate individual behaviors. Clever Sys. software introduces the third generation of behavioral testing, with video tracking so refined that it detects not only animal motion, but individual behaviors. Our software tracks not only the body of the animal, but also the head, tail, and individual limbs. Therefore, we are able to measure body orientation (important for sniffing behaviors in novel object tasks ), small movements (providing greater sensitivity for fear conditioning ), and independent limb movements (for gait analysis and behaviors such as eating or grooming ). Clever Sys products provide measurements of ethograms that no automated systems could previously accommodate. Our behavioral tracking systems can be integrated with bio-feedback measurements, such as electroencephalograms, neuron-firing signals, body temperature, electrocardiograms, and ultrasonic vocalization signals, allowing in-depth analysis of behavior and physiology.
