I made a journey of 868 miles for an appointment in Rapid City, SD. When I got there I noticed an stinky fluid dripping from my exhaust pipe and discovered the entire passenger side rear underbelly was covered! I asked for a reputable mechanic and they gave me the number for Cory’s 5 Point Tire & Auto Service. They were busy but recommended I call their partner shop Tri-State Tire and they said they could look at it first thing in the morning.
Turns out I blew out the rear passenger bearing. They disassembled the brakes, axles rods and bearings they found more issues and showed me their concerns; my other bearing was on its last leg and both bearings had been worn for a long time and they were biting into the axle rods significantly. The crew was personable and thorough and put my safety first. My vehicle was old so they called around but eventually found all the parts in town; I appreciate their diligent effort to get me back on the road. I needed new axle rods, bearings, gaskets, brakes and a new passenger rear brake drum. It was expensive fix so they gave me a discount (greatly appreciated, still over $1000).
Any previous mechanic should have felt the “lag” in the van when test driving after other repairs and if replaced right away , it would have been a cheap fix. ***If you have a vehicle where the rear bearings are getting worn out… you will step on the gas and it will feel like the rear end is slower and needs a few seconds to catch up. That’s pretty much your only symptom. If you notice that symptom, replace your bearings right away.*** If you ignore it you’ll end up with damage like mine… or… your bearing could chew all the way through the axle rod and your tire could fly off while you’re driving and hit another vehicle.
The return 868 miles felt like I was driving a Cadillac!
This Tri-State Tire is well worth 5 stars! They’re worth their weight in gold and I trusted them with my life and am glad I made it home safe and sound!
